General Nathaniel Lyon: (1818-61) Graduated from West Point in 1841 ranking #11. During the years before the Civil War he fought against the Florida Seminoles and was brevetted captain for gallantry in the Mexican War. More than any other man he saved Missouri for the Union in 1861. He was killed in action at the battle of Wilson's Creek, Mo., August 10, 1861.
