Libby Prison, Richmond, Va. This famous prison was the scene of much suffering during the War Between the States. Union prisoners were crowded into this building like sardines in a box. The building was formally the Libby & Son Ship Chandlers & Grocers. The prisoners were ill treated and more than half starved by the brutal keepers. Some wonderful escapes were made...

(1808-1889) Born in Fairview, Kentucky, he spent most of his childhood in Wilkinson County, Mississippi. He graduated in the West Point class of 1828 where two of his classmates were Albert Sidney Johnston, and Leonidas Polk, both future Confederate Generals who would be killed in the War...

Coined the famous phrase, "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!" at the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864!

(1801-1870) He entered the navy as a Midshipman in 1810 after having been virtually adopted by Commodore David Porter. The friendship between the two families began when Porter's father was buried on the same day as Farragut's mother in New Orleans. He fought in the Mexican War and was awaiting orders at his Norfolk, Va. home when the Civil War broke out. Told that a person with Union sentiments could not live in Virginia, he...

Imperial, cabinet card photograph, on thick 6 x 10 card mount, with gold lettering imprint, Elmer Chickering, 21 West St., Boston on the front mount. Very handsome, half view portrait of a Massachusetts Militia officer sporting a thick moustache curled up at the ends. He is wearing a double breasted frock coat, with shoulder scales, Massachusetts State Militia uniform buttons, rectangular U.S. Eagle belt plate, with ornate officer's belt, braided, gilded, auguillette adornments, ending in gold metal...
