The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration awarded by the United States government. It is bestowed by the President in the name of Congress, and is conferred on members of the U.S. Armed forces who distinguish themselves through conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in action against an enemy of the United States.

He was wounded at Gaines's Mill, Va., and Gettysburg, Pa.

(1835-1911) Born in New York City, he graduated in the West Point class of 1855. He fought against the Florida Seminoles after his graduation, and returned to the U.S. Military Academy in 1856 as an instructor in mathematics. At the outbreak of the Civil War he took part in the defense of Fort Pickens, Florida, and also served at 1st Bull Run and in the 1862 Virginia Peninsular campaign.
