This category has a listing of New York Yankees related memorabilia that I have collected over the course of the past 64 years. Although my Dad was a die hard Brooklyn Dodgers fan, when the team moved to Los Angeles in 1957 he was left without his favorite New York team. My Dad attended many games in person at Ebbetts Field. Baseball was the king of sports back in those days and following your favorite MLB team was tantamount to a religion. When the Dodgers left New York it had an extremely profound negative affect on their fans my father among them. With no local team of their own to root for many of these folks became Yankee haters. My Dad being the huge baseball fan that it was still found time to go to the Bronx to Yankee Stadium so that he could watch professional baseball up close and personal. Don't forget that back in those days very few games were on television and if you wanted to follow the play by play it was the radio that was your method. I can remember sitting out in the backyard of my great Uncle Pietro, big Yankees fan, listening to Red Barber, Mel Allen and Phil Rizzuto calling their games on the radio. He built a shelf on the side of the garage to house one of those old fashioned table top radios of the era. My Dad took me to Yankee Stadium to see my first MLB game and I was overwhelmed by how green the grass was, the huge center field with the Ruth, Gehrig and Huggins monuments on the playing field, and the famous facade around the top of the upper decks. I fell in Love with Mickey Mantle who became my favorite player of all time, and with the likes of Maris, Berra, Ford, and all of their other stars I could not help become a Yankees fan. However, knowing how my Dad felt, I did not make such a big deal of it, but secretly I could not wait to go to Yankee Stadium again. So according to many New York baseball fans, I became an anomaly. You were not suppose to root for the Mets and Yankees! It was one or the other. Made no sense to me since they were in different leagues which luckily for us allowed us to see the greatest stars of all of major league baseball from both the American League and National Leagues.
Of course in 1962 my Dad also became a Mets fan, and it was difficult for all of the old Dodgers fans to root for a ball club like the Mets that was so inept in their first several years. But eventually they drafted some elite pitchers, made a few smart trades, and in 1969 became the World Champions of baseball. The Yankees have won 27 World Championships, the most in any sport!
