United States Senator from Texas
(1803-57) Self taught, he studied law, was admitted to the bar, and commenced practice in Georgia. He moved to Nacogdoches, Texas in 1835, and was a delegate to the convention which declared for the independence of Texas in 1836. He was the 1st Secretary of War of the Republic of Texas, and at the battle of San Jacinto he took command of the forces and retained command until October 1836, when he resumed his duties as Secretary of War. He was a member of the 2nd Congress of the Republic of Texas, and served as chief justice of the supreme court of Texas, 1838-42. He was appointed major general of militia of the Republic of Texas. He served as president of the convention that confirmed the annexation of Texas to the United States in 1845. Upon the admission of Texas as a State into the Union he was elected as U.S. Senator, serving 1846-57. He was President pro tempore of the Senate during the 35th Congress, and was the chairman of the Committee on Enrolled Bills. He also served on the Committee on the Militia, and the Committee on Post Office and Post Roads.
