Written by a veteran of the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry

Boston, Nov. 7th, 1888
Samuel B. Read, Esq. Adjutant of Gettysburg Post 191, G.A.R.
Dear Sir and Comrade,
My time being quite fully occupied in the performance of my duties as Constable of the Municipal Court, I feel it necessary to resign my position of Sergeant Major in our Post, and I hereby tender you my resignation, still retaining the zealous interest I have always felt in our organization and hoping that the warm fraternal feelings always found at the front in all our sociable and personal relations may continue until the bugle shall sound "taps." I remain,
Yours Very Respectfully, E. Warren Hudson
