Nicknamed "the Dominican Dandy," he was well known for his high leg kick

He was the first Dominican player, and the first foreign-born player ever elected to the Major League Baseball HOF

(1937-) Born in Laguna Verde, Dominican Republic, nicknamed, "the Dominican Dandy," Juan Marichal was a right handed pitcher who was known for his enormously high leg leg. He played 16 seasons in Major League Baseball, 1960-1975, most of them with the San Francisco Giants. His 18 wins in 1962 led the Giants to the World Series, but only to lose to the New York Yankees in 7 games. Marichal had 191 victories in the 1960's which was the most by any MLB pitcher in that decade. He was a 20 game winner on six occasions; won 25 games 3 times; had 26 wins in 1968 which still stands as the Giants franchise record; he pitched a no-hitter in June 1963; he pitched three 1 hitters; 9 time All Star; 1965 All Star game MVP; two time National League wins leader; MLB ERA leader in 1969; and in one of the greatest pitching duels in MLB history, he went 16 scoreless innings against Warren Spahn and the Milwaukee Braves, the Giants winning the contest 1-0, on July 2, 1963, at Candlestick Park in S.F., when Willie Mays hit a walk off home run. Marichal had his #27 retired by the Giants, he is in their Hall of Fame; and he was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame, at Cooperstown, N.Y. in 1983, becoming the first Dominican player, and the first foreign-born player ever elected to the MLB HOF.
