His long and faithful pre Civil War service in the U.S. Army was awarded by his appointment as Adjutant General in 1852. He served throughout the Civil War as Adjutant and Inspector General of the Confederacy. His organizational abilities and knowledge of procedure made his services to the Confederacy invaluable.
