General Ulysses S. Grant: (1822-1885) Graduated in the West Point class of 1843. Fought with distinction in the Mexican War. Commander-in-Chief of all Union armies during the Civil War, 1863-65. He fought in the battles of Belmont, Fort Henry, Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth, Iuka, Chattanooga, Vicksburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and in the Appomattox campaign where he defeated Confederate General Robert E. Lee receiving the surrender of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia on April 9, 1865. Served as the 18th President of the United States 1869-77.
