(1937-) Born in Follansbee, West Virginia, Holtz was a legendary college football coach, and television analyst. During his career he was the head football coach of the College of William and Mary; North Carolina State University; the University of Arkansas; the University of Minnesota; the University of Notre Dame; and the University of South Carolina. His combined career college record as a head coach was 249-132-7. His 1988 Notre Dame squad was 12-0 during the regular season, and they squared off against the #3 and undefeated University of West Virginia in the 1989 Fiesta Bowl played on January 2, 1989. Holtz's "Fighting Irish" were victorious beating the "Mountaineers" of West Virginia by a final score of 34-21. This win earned the 13-0 University of Notre Dame the National Championship. This highly decorated college football coach won numerous awards in his career including the Paul "Bear" Bryant Award; the Eddie Robinson, Coach of the Year Award; and several other prestigious awards. Holtz had a 12-8-2 record in Bowl Games, and is the only college football coach to lead 6 different programs to bowl games; and the only coach to guide 4 different teams into the final top 15 rankings! He also coached the NFL New York Jets team for one season. Lou Holtz was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006. He also has been a very successful college football analyst for many years.
