U.S. Congressman and Senator from Louisiana

(1832-84) At the outbreak of the Civil War he was aide-de-camp of Governor Thomas O. Moore of Louisiana and in August 1861, he was commissioned colonel of the 13th Louisiana Infantry which he led at Shiloh, in the Kentucky campaign, and at Chickamauga. Promoted to rank of brigadier general in early 1864, he fought with distinction in the Atlanta campaign, in Hood's invasion of Tennessee, and in the defense of Mobile. After the war he served as a U.S. Congressman and a U.S. Senator from Louisiana.
