Evan M. Buchanan, enlisted as a captain, on March 24, 1862, and was commissioned into the U.S. Volunteers Commissary Department. Captain Buchanan and his orderly were killed on September 30, 1864, at Brook's Furnace, on the Shenandoah River by two of Mosby's guerrillas, Charles McDonough and Wirt Ashby. In a report from General Stevenson to General Hardie, it was reported that Buchanan was allegedly murdered after his capture by the two Mosby men who were described as ambushers and murderers. Buchanan was the nephew of Confederate Admiral Franklin Buchanan, and the brother of T. McKean Buchanan, Lieutenant Commander, U.S.N. |
