General U.S. Grant stands at the center flanked by members of his staff. Seated third from the left is Colonel Ely S. Parker, a Seneca Indian who served as Grant's military secretary. It was Parker who transcribed Grant's terms of surrender at Appomattox. Also present in the photograph are General Seth Williams, seated immediately to Grant's left as you view the image, and General John Rawlins, Grant's chief of staff, sitting to Grant's right.
