(1826-95) Born in Southampton County, Va., he graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1847. Studying engineering, he was successively engineer of several Virginia railroads, and in 1861 was president and superintendent of the Norfolk & Petersburg R.R. At the outbreak of the Civil War he was appointed colonel of the 6th Virginia Infantry. He took part in the capture of the Norfolk Navy Yard and commanded the Norfolk District until its evacuation. After aiding in the erection of the defenses at Drewry's Bluff, Mahone was continuously with the Army of Northern Virginia from Seven Pines to Appomattox, except while recovering from a severe wound received at 2nd Manassas. He was promoted to rank of brigadier general on Nov. 16, 1861, and major general for his part in the battle of the crater at Petersburg, July 30, 1864. General Robert E. Lee had high praise for Mahone, saying, of all the younger men in his army, Mahone made the largest contribution to organization and command. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1880.
Seated view posing with his arms folded across his chest. He wears his famous pleated general's blouse with stars and wreath insignia on the collar and a slouch hat with star and shield prominently displayed on the side. General Mahone is imprinted on the front mount. Backmark: Brady's National Photographic Portrait Galleries, New York and Washington, D.C. |
