(1828-1902) Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he graduated from Harvard, and was admitted to the bar in 1851. In 1864, at the age of 36, Gray became the youngest man appointed to the Massachusetts State Supreme Court, and became the court's chief justice in 1873. President Chester A. Arthur appointed him as a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court in 1881, and he served for 24 years resigning due to poor health in 1902.
