(1747-92) Naval hero of the American Revolution. During a close quarters battle in 1876 with a British ship, Captain Jones's own vessel was badly damaged. The British commander shouted out to Jones are you going to surrender? Captain John Paul Jones gave his famous reply, "Surrender? I have not yet begun to fight!" When the battle smoke cleared, Captain Jones and his crew captured the British ship! Beautiful portrait engraving of Captain Jones in uniform on board of a ship. He holds a telescope in one hand with a cannon behind him. Antique engraving in naval uniform with printed facsimile autograph below his likeness. Executed from the original painting by Chappel. Published in 1861 by Johnson, Fry & Co., N.Y. Light age toning. Very desirable.
