Prominent General during the American Revolutionary War
(1742-86) Born in Rhode Island, he served as a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. He saw action in the battles of Trenton, Germantown and Monmouth, but is best known for his successful Southern Campaign in which he forced British General Lord Corwallis out of the Carolinas.
