Very rare Confederate officer's image holding a Nashville Plow Works Cavalry Sabre, and a blockade-run British imported dual Lion's Head-Snake belt buckle!
Wet plate albumen carte de visite photograph, mounted to a 2 3/8 x 4 card. Very rare view of an unidentified Confederate officer standing at parade rest with his drawn Nashville Plow Works Cavalry Sabre at his front. Dressed to kill, this young Reb officer is wearing a kepi with hat wreath insignia, a very rare blockade-run British imported dual Lion's Head / Snake belt buckle, with his scabbard and sash hanging from his belt. Imprint on the front mount, "D. ROWLAND, Photographer, Frankfort, Ky." The verso bears the imprint of, "Mrs. James O'Donoghue's Art Gallery, Opposite the Capitol Hotel, Frankfort, Ky." I believe this might very well be one of General John Hunt Morgan's officers photographed in Frankfort on one of Morgan's famous, wild forays through the Bluegrass State! Light age toning and wear. Very fine condition. Very rare Kentucky/Confederate cavalry image! |
